Terms of Service

Effective 8 September 2026 · Last updated 8 September 2026

These are the terms you agree to when you use Filo. They are written to be understood rather than endured, but they are a contract — please read them.

The short version

  • Filo is free, and you don't need an account.
  • A Filo score is an informed opinion, not a guarantee. We read a care label and tell you what we think. Sometimes we'll be wrong.
  • We don't sell you anything. When you buy, you buy from a retailer — their terms, their returns, their problem to fix.
  • We may earn an affiliate fee on a purchase. It never affects what we recommend.
  • Don't scrape Filo, resell its output, or use it to build a competing dataset.
  • British Columbia law governs these terms.

01Agreeing to these terms

These Terms of Service form an agreement between you and Brooklyn Venier, a sole proprietor based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, operating as Filo ("Filo", "we", "us"). By downloading, opening, or using the Filo app, the Filo browser extension, or this website (together, the "Service"), you agree to them. If you do not agree, please don't use the Service.

Our Privacy Policy is part of these terms.

02What Filo is

Filo reads a garment's care label, assesses the fibre composition and what we know about the item, and returns a quality score, a plain-language verdict, and — where we can find them — better-made alternatives at a comparable price.

Filo is free to use. There is no subscription, no paywall, and no purchase inside the app.

03Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old to use Filo. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Filo only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms on your behalf.

04About the verdicts

This is the section that matters most, so it is the plainest one.

A Filo score is an opinion, formed from limited information. It is not a promise about how a garment will perform.

Specifically, you should understand that:

  • We are working from a label. A care tag states fibre content. It says nothing about yarn quality, knit density, seam construction, dye fastness, or the factory that made it — all of which affect how a garment actually wears.
  • Text recognition can misread a tag. Creased, faded, or unusual labels are read imperfectly. Always check the composition shown on screen against the tag in your hand before relying on a verdict.
  • Prices, availability and product details change and may be wrong or out of date by the time you see them. Confirm everything on the retailer's own page before buying.
  • Longevity estimates and cost-per-wear figures are illustrative. They are modelled, not measured.
  • Filo is not professional advice of any kind, and is not a substitute for your own judgement or for a retailer's product information.
  • We make no claim about safety, legal compliance, sustainability certification, or a brand's labour practices unless we say so explicitly and cite a source.

Use Filo as a second opinion. Decisions about what to buy, keep, or return remain yours.

05Your local profile

Filo works fully without an account. If you create a profile, it is stored on your device only — we hold no copy and operate no login system. That means:

  • You can delete your profile, closet and passcode at any time from Account → Delete my profile and data.
  • We cannot recover your profile, closet, or passcode if you lose them.
  • Deleting the app deletes them permanently.
  • Keeping your device secure is your responsibility.

06Acceptable use

Please don't:

  • Scrape, crawl, or bulk-query the Service, or use automated means to submit scans;
  • Resell, redistribute, or republish Filo's scores, verdicts, or written assessments commercially, or use them to build a competing product or dataset;
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract our scoring method, except where that right cannot lawfully be excluded;
  • Interfere with the Service, probe it for vulnerabilities, or circumvent any rate limit or access control;
  • Upload anything unlawful, or any photograph you do not have the right to share — including photographs of other people taken without their knowledge;
  • Present Filo's output as your own, or as an official assessment of, or endorsement by, any brand;
  • Use the Service to harass a brand, retailer, or individual, or to make claims about a product that our output does not support.

We may suspend access to the Service where we reasonably believe it is being used this way.

07Affiliate links and how we make money

Filo is free because some links to recommended products carry an affiliate tag. If you buy through one, the retailer may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Two commitments, and we hold ourselves to both:

  • No paid rankings. No brand can pay to appear in your results, to rank higher, or to receive a better score. Ranking is settled on quality before any affiliate step runs.
  • Disclosure at the point of decision. The affiliate relationship is disclosed in the app next to the recommendations themselves, not buried in a footer.

We are not paid by any brand to write a verdict, and we do not accept payment to change one.

08Buying from retailers

Filo does not sell anything. When you tap a recommended product, you leave Filo for a third-party retailer's website. Any purchase is a contract between you and that retailer, governed by their terms and their privacy policy.

We are not responsible for their products, prices, stock, shipping, returns, refunds, warranties, customer service, or conduct. Problems with an order need to be taken up with the retailer.

09Your content and our content

Photos you add

You keep ownership of any garment photo you submit. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to process that image for the sole purpose of returning your result. We do not retain it afterwards, and we will not use your photographs for marketing, training, or publication.

Ours

The Filo name, logo, written verdicts, scoring method, design, and all other material in the Service are owned by us and protected by copyright and trade-mark law. You may use the Service for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. Sharing an individual verdict card is expressly welcome. Everything beyond that needs our permission in writing.

Brands we name

Brand and retailer names appear in the Service for identification and commentary only. Their trade-marks belong to their owners. Filo is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any brand it assesses.

10Availability and changes

Filo is a young product operated by one person. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it, and we may modify these terms. If we make a material change to these terms, we will update the date at the top of this page and tell you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Filo after that means you accept the revised terms.

We do not promise uninterrupted service. Analysis depends on servers and third-party providers that can fail.

11Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty as to accuracy, reliability, or availability.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that any score, verdict, price, or recommendation is accurate, complete, or current.

Some jurisdictions — including British Columbia — do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. Where that is the case, the exclusions above apply only to the extent permitted, and nothing in these terms limits any right you have under applicable consumer protection legislation.

12Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Filo will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or opportunity, arising out of or relating to your use of the Service — including any purchase you make, or decline to make, in reliance on a Filo verdict.

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or (b) CAD $100.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

13Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold Filo harmless from any claim, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the Service, your breach of these terms, or your infringement of anyone else's rights.

14Ending this agreement

You may stop using Filo at any time by deleting the app; that ends this agreement. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms or if we discontinue the Service. Sections 4, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 survive termination.

15Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, and you consent to their jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep any right you have to bring proceedings in your local courts under your own law.

Before filing anything, please email us. Most things are faster to fix than to litigate.

16General

  • Entire agreement. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about the Service.
  • Severability. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
  • No waiver. If we don't enforce a term, we haven't given up the right to.
  • Assignment. You may not assign these terms. We may assign them to a successor of the business.
  • Apple. These terms are between you and Filo, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app, and is a third-party beneficiary entitled to enforce these terms against you.
